JuniperPublishers-Pancreatic Carcinoma: An Overview

Journal of Surgery -  JuniperPublishers Editorial Pancreatic cancer is the 12th most common cancer in the world. The estimated 5-year prevalence of people in the world living with pancreatic cancer is 4.1 per 100,000. The average lifetime risk of developing a pancreatic carcinoma for both men and women is 1.5%. The number of new cases of pancreatic cancer is 12.4 per 100,000 men and women per year and the number of deaths is 10.9 per 100,000 men and women per year, making it one of the most deadly solid organ tumors of the body [1,2]. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is by far the most common histologic subtype of pancreatic carcinoma, regardless of the location within pancreas. Other rare histological subtypes include acinar, squamous, pancreatic endocrine neoplasms or tumors of non-epithelial origin [3]. The various proven risk factors for the development of Pancreatic cancer include cigarette smoking (current> past), Diabetes Mellitus, Obesity, Heavy alcohol intake, Chro

JuniperPublishers-Excellent vs. Good Range of Motion after TKA, What Makes the Difference?

Image
Journal of Surgery -  JuniperPublishers Abstract Background:  Achieving full range of motion (ROM) is one of the most important goals in total knee replacement (TKA). The aim of this study was to identify surgical-dependent factors that are correlated to a full ROM. Methods:  Between August 2013 and July 2014, on 227 total knee replacements (132 patients), who were assessed for range of motion at least one month postoperatively, x-ray measurements were performed. We have included patient demographics (sex, age, body mass index and preoperative range of motion), type of TKA, as well as radiographic measurements including patella length, patellar height, Insall-Salvati Ratio, joint line to patella distance, joint line to tibial tubercle distance, joint line to fibula distance, joint line to medial epicondyle distance and other ratios. The total knee replacements were divided into two groups, an excellent ROM group (more than 130 degrees) and a good ROM group (between 110 and 129

JuniperPublishers-Anatomical Variation of the Anterior Cutaneous Branch of Femoral Nerve: A Case Report

Image
Journal of Surgery -  JuniperPublishers Abstract The femoral nerve is the largest branch of lumbar plexus. It arises from the dorsal branches of the second to fourth ventral rami. By passing behind the inguinal ligament into the thigh, it is split into the anterior and posterior divisions by the lateral circumflex femoral artery. The branches from the anterior divisions are mainly to the sartorius muscle and two cutaneous branches, that is, the medial and intermediate cutaneous branches of thigh. This article reports a case of anatomical variation of the anterior cutaneous branch of femoral nerve. The anterior cutaneous branch of femoral nerve after dividing into two terminal branches, the medial cutaneous nerve pierces the sartorius muscle. We have to be aware of these types of nerves when an operation is performed around this area, and the patient should be informed about the chance of injury to the nerve as referred to in this article. Keywords:  Femoral nerve; Variation; A

JuniperPublishers-Acute Appendicitis in Pregnancy, Management and Outcomes: A Hospital Based Study

Image
Journal of Surgery -  JuniperPublishers Abstract Background:  Acute appendicitis is the most common surgical emergency in pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical presentation, management and outcomes (both maternal and fetal) in pregnant patients admitted with features of acte appendicitis. Material and Methods:  A total of 56 pregnant women with features of acute appendicitis were admitted, out of these 51 patients underwent appendectomy, and 5 patients were managed conservatively in our hospital, between January 2010 and June 2016,weretrospectively analyzed the results in terms of presentation, management and fetomaternal outcomes in these patients. Results:  Intraoperative findings and patrhological reports were supportive of the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in 88.23% (45/51) of the cases who were operated. There was perforated appendicitis in 11.7% (6/51). Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, leukocyte count, CRP and body temperature were had
